The Journeys of St. Paul:Turkey, Greece, and Italy
Paul's mission travels, after his study time in Jerusalem under the highly respected Rabbi Gamaliel and later transformation experience on the road to Damascus, were mainly directed to the regions of the present-day countries of Turkey, Greece, and Italy. We highlight some of the most important of the remaining sites to visit, developing an understanding of the contextual issues of pagan religions in Greek society, with other political and economic issues, which impeded and contoured his impact and efforts to teach about a Jewish messiah from an unimportant backwater province (Palestine) of the Roman empire, to a sophisticated and culturally advanced Hellenistic society flung around the Mediterranean shores. In addition to such important Pauline locations as Ephesus, Athens, Corinth, and Rome, we also travel across the panoramic country sides and visit the key tour sites of Cappadocia (with its famous hot-air balloon rides over the fantastical topography of the fairy castles and underground cities); Istanbul's classic gems of the Blue Mosque, St. Sophia, and Topkapi Palace; the Greek sites of the oracles of Delphi, Mars Hill and the Parthenon in Athens, then fly to Naples to wander through lava-buried Pompeii beside Mt. Vesuvius. driving right up the Appian way into Rome for the catacombs, St. Paul's internment house by the Tiber, the Sistine chapel in the Vatican, his burial place outside the walls, and so much more.
